This commercial fit-out for a tiny deli and sandwich shop in Potts Point takes inspiration from the convivial feel of small, busy Parisian bakeries and cafes but delivers a clean, modern aesthetic. Every centimetre of the main space - measuring only 15 square metres - has been utilised in order to fit the required brief and to ensure all compliances were met.

A long, narrow benchtop featuring terracotta tiles separates the service area from customers, while a discreet bench seat finished with the same tiles and located at the end of the space allows visitors to enjoy the ambience while waiting for orders. Since the original area included a step at entry, a concrete slab was poured to lower and level the floor, increasing the ceiling height and making the shop feel bigger and brighter.

Limewashed paint was used throughout on the walls, the joinery finish is a calming light maple veneer, small accents of colours were added - for instance, burnt orange on the sprinkler pipes - and terracotta tiles were left ungrouted for a more rustic look.

In order to maximise the space, display shelves had been carved in the masonry wall while a mirror splashback enhances the depth of the room.

The minimalistic interior is dotted with dimmable led fluro tube lights, that complement the lines of the space and dramatise the bare look.
